The Gratiot-Isabella RESD provides substitute teacher registration for all public and non-public school districts in Gratiot and Isabella Counties. Each district receives a monthly updated listing of eligible substitute teachers and does their own calling, sets their own wage scale, and enrolls its substitute teachers into their own payroll system. Substitute teachers are not Gratiot-Isabella RESD employees. The registration process ensures employing districts that the substitute teachers available have proper credentials and have completed both state and FBI criminal history background checks using digital/electronic fingerprinting equipment.
Registrations are valid for one school year only and need to be renewed each school year. Renewal paperwork and instructions are mailed out to previous year subs in July. New registrations are ongoing throughout the year. What You’ll Need to Register as a Substitute Teacher An official transcript (on-line transcript not acceptable) showing completion of at least 90 semester credit hours with a minimum of a 2.0 GPA from a four-year accredited college or university and/or a copy of a MI Teacher Certificate is needed at the time of registration. Application for a Substitute Teacher Permit (if needed) will be submitted to the Michigan Department of Education and they will bill the applicant directly for the current school year $25 permit fee. A picture ID/MI Driver’s License and a check or money order made out to the Gratiot-Isabella RESD in the amount of $67 to pay for state and FBI criminal history background checks is also needed. The GIRESD has purchased the equipment to electronically scan and submit the fingerprints for processing. Fingerprinting is done in our office most days from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please call before you come to be sure the fingerprinting technician is available.
The Substitute Teacher packet can be picked up and completed either at the GIRESD Mahoney Building in Ithaca or at Mt. Pleasant Public Schools Central Office which is located at 720 North Kinney Street in Mt. Pleasant. Mt. Pleasant Public Schools is the only one of our districts that uses an automated calling system, Aesop. Those interested in subbing in that district also need to see Jamie Cotter, their Substitute Supervisor to fill out their paperwork, be assigned a pin number and get instructions on how to use Aesop.
