Attendance Systems and Supports

The GIRESD Department of Education Innovation & Technology is committed to taking a data-driven, comprehensive approach to addressing chronic absenteeism. This effort begins with engaging students and families and preventing absences before they lead to academic setbacks.

Increasing school attendance requires a strong collaboration among our community, schools, courts, and partner agencies. Together, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed through consistent and meaningful school participation.

To reduce chronic absenteeism in our schools, the Office of Attendance Systems and Supports, in partnership with our local districts, is committed to using a tiered system of support.

While truancy focuses primarily on unexcused absences and often involves court intervention, chronic absenteeism addresses both excused and unexcused absences and their impact on a student’s academic success. Our approach emphasizes prevention and community-based support rather than punishment.

Our goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to attend school every day and thrive. If you are experiencing challenges in getting your child to school regularly, please reach out to your child’s school or our office. We are here to collaborate with you and provide the support and resources your family needs.
